what years was I in unit 5?

Todd,

Please send to sjsuss@yahoo.com. That's great that you have the list!

I am so confused... originally I thought I was in unit 5 in '72, pioneers in '73, and WT in '74, but then I was corrected that I was on the WT in '75.

Wait a minute... now I think I did unit 5 twice - could that be? Left back from graduating sleep-away camp? Someone help me remember!!!

Richie Werner was in Pioneers with me in 1973- And I believe that Mark Jezarian was my counselor that year as well. I remember visiting him in the Bronx after camp that summer. Richie and I were on western trip in 74.

I got promoted from Unit 4 directly to Pioneers.
I must have been a Wel-Met prodigy.

Richie Werner

I think he's in Denver, as is his sister Donna. My cousin Paula Siegel (now Paula Miranda) stays in touch periodically with Donna. Paula was in pioneers as a unit clerk in '74 - I think, Yipsy was unit director.

Richie was also a 4 sport Bronx athlete: hoops, stick ball, off the point, and bombardamin.

After this web site came up, I got in touch with Richie. He tells me that he is happy- married with kids, and a lawyer. Lives in Denver.

I had many great times hanging with Richie-

Richie was a good friend from grade school through junior high school, then we kind of drifted apart. Remember sleep-overs at each other's house, little league, and the aforementioned sports activities at Vanny (the park in our neighborhood). I remember thinking about / comparing city life vs. suburban life. When we used to come home from school, we all just went out to the park, and as soon as 2 guys were there we'd be playing 1-on-1, then as more guys showed up, 3-on-3, then fulls. So the park, not school, was the center of our after school life, unlike life on the Gisland.

Glad to hear Richie is doing well!

Will check back later... have a tee time to get to.

For me, a bored kid on the Gisland, coming up to the Bronx- or into Brooklyn to hang with camp friends was the best. And I knew that it would always be city living for me.

My friends like Richie and all the boys from Brooklyn, seemed to have the opposite reaction when coming out to LI. My house, in Valley Stream, was right in between the city kids and the more eastern ones so I always had lots of people sleeping over.

I remember taking the 4 up to Moshlu Parkway to visit Richie. I once got followed by a drunken guy but managed to get rid of him somewhere on the way up.

We were in Unit 5 for two years in a row. It must have been our overwhelming maturity.

Hi! Just got an email from Richie Werner! I did not look at this thread yet! Wrote him after seeing the email address on Steve Alter's email.

Cliff, you were in Pioneers. I remember you were good friends with Lauren Green. That was in Pioneers. Do not remember you not there. Carey Busner, can you back me up on this?

Steve, I think we saw each other when you came to visit Richie in the Bronx. I used to live in their building.

Sid Do you remember a guy named Steven Fried who lived in the same building on Gouverneur with the Werners & the Weills and he went to WM.

Steven Fried and Richie Werner

I do remember Steven Fried - both from the Bronx and from Wel-Met. I was talking with Stephen Kramer the other day, and he remembers (I didn't) that Steven Fried worked on the boat docks. He was a year or two older than us.

Please give Richie my email address: sjsuss@yahoo.com. Would be good to hear from him or see him post to the board.

Michael

I got your email today. I did not get the last one. I sent you a response.

I am swamped over the next few days. I will write something detailed in those days.

Sid and Jeff. My email is barkerlj@comcast.net. I would love to hear from you. Anyone else is welcome also.

Rosie, thank you for your email. I remember you well. I recall how funny and friendly you were.

I must admit I was a little hesitant at first to participate in this virtual reunion. It has been a long time. A lot has happened. Some good, some bad.

I no longer have any hesitation. I welcome my old friends back into my life. May this be the start of something new.

Tell we speak again.

Larry

I don't know Patti - he seems pretty adamant about this. Maybe we should believe him.

I would have sworn he was there too, but only because I don't remember him NOT being there. The truth is I don't really remember him being there, either.

Back-up

Ladies,

I can vouch for Cliff. I remember that he didn't come for Pioneers. But Cliff, I believe you came up one day for a visit, didn't you?

But that was the year that the "other" Ageloff (Roy from Brooklyn) got kicked out of camp - besmirching the Wel-Met/Ageloff name.

And for the record, I was held back in Unit I - did that for 2 years (one year with Cliff in my bunk). In fact, Cliff was the only one I knew from back then. I skipped Unit IV (when most of you came in) because I spent the summer in Israel, so I met all of you guys in 1973 - Unit V.

I swear I don't remember Howard Stern - was he a counselor for us? His bio shows him in the mess hall then onto Western trips - someone said they remember him in the mess hall? Too bad I don't, would've been nice to know someone famous

Stern was co with Danny Hill in unit V. He says his memory is quite faded from that summer.

Wow Rosie, you DO have a great memory..I did come up for a day.

What did Roy do to get his butt kicked out? Maybe it is the same Roy that got sent up to Club Fed for stock fraud and assualting a federal agent?

And who could forget Bobby 'baseball' Korngut?

..and I am betting Karen Labovsky (get over it KL, we can ALL be friends again) is LURKING on this site and we are all wishing she would post a morsel for us to digest.

Cliff,
I don't remember what Roy did to get kicked out - breaking and entering, stealing? not sure. Can't believe you mentioned Korngut - I just got an e-mail from him (literally about half an hour ago). He is a riot - still the same...

Hey, I don't know about you freaks but I am taking the evening off the internet to go lash a few logs to my canoe rack and maybe make a few God's Eyes for next week's Earth Day festivities.

So that was THE Howie Stern? In Unit V? And is Danny Hill the same one who was in Unit II in 1970? His picture is on here somewhere. I remember him from Unit II, but not Unit V.

Update

The Howard Stern was at Wel-Met - his pics are posted on this site - but from everything I can ascertain, he was working the mess hall when we were campers and then he was counselor on a Western Trip before our year. It seems that some of us remembered him being there, but I sure as hell don't.

summer 73

Howard Stern was a unit 1 counselor and Dan Hill was in unit 5 my cousin was a camper in his group in unit 5 and my step brother was in howard's group in unit 1. Scott would remember because he worked the kitchen all those years and told me storys about what he and howard did to the hot chocolate. JUST REMEMBER!
These storys were told to an 11 year old over 30 years ago, I did not at that time know who this howard stern was and he was probably just trying to gross out a kid who enjoyed hot chocolate with his frootsy loopsys.

There was a small group of conselers that hung out with Howard Stern the summer of 1974, when I was a conselor for some of you in Pioneer Camp. The group included me, Peter Bass, Scott Zerler and a couple of others whose names escape me. Howard was working in the kitchen that year. After the summer, me and Scott Zerler (a Bronx boy), took a trip up to New Hampshire to check out a potential graduate school, and we had planned to visit Howard, who was in college in Boston. The sad truth is that we missed the exit in Boston (Brooklyn Ave???) and we just kept on going back to The Bronx. I regret that we didn't stop to see him, could have been a great story to tell years later, but sometimes life is nothing more than missed opportunities. Howard was just like the rest of us, basically a wise guy from NY. No one had any inkling what greatness he had inside him.
