N'burg-Unit 5, 1967, pioneers '68
Anyone else here who was in Narrowsburg in Unit 5 (cut the chatter) and/or Pioneers in '68? Six weeks both summers? I was in Bunk 98 and I think Tent J these years. It was great to find this site.

Steve, you were in Bunk 95 (There was no bunk 98). Last time I saw you was at Cardozo HS many, many moons ago. How have you been?

I was there at that time. I think I was bunk 97?
And the last Pioneers on Pioneer hill. We built the new pioneers, I think it was behind unit 4? |

Narrowsburg-Unit 5 '67 and Pioneers '68
Amazing to see 3 people I knew. Alan, I do remember crossing paths at Cardozo. If I remember from camp, you lived in Bay Terrace and went to Bayside.
Ken Fried, I remember you as well. From the Bronx if I recall. Our counsellor in Unit 5 was Stu, but can't remember his lasst name. I remember doing something, I don't remember what, where he was so pissed off at me that he chased me to Silver Lake. I think we were all in the same bunk in Unit 5. I think that it was bunk 97, but not sure of the number other than remembering it was the highest number of the bunks. I can't remember who was in my tent the next year but think it was Tent J. Counsellor was Barry Gerchuk. I searched for him on this site and saw a posting that he had died young. I knew Janet at Cornell and do remember talking about Wel-Met, probably around freshman year. |

Pioneers 1968 Rocked
Hey Guys,
I haven't posted in a long time now but couldn't help but chime in on that very special year when we built a new Pioneers out in the woods. We got to sleep on the newly built tent platforms for one night but for the rest of the time we where still up on the hill. I was in Montreal a few months ago and remembered that we had gone up there as Pioneers to the Expo 67 even though it was 1968. Frank Korowitz was in charge of us all and it was a crazy time in the world and for all of us. I have gotton together with Joan Michaels a few times recently when she comes to Boca to visit friends. I remember Don Main working us to near death some days as we tried to finish up all of the building before our six weeks were up. I exchanged a bunch of e-mails with Rita Karasuk last year. I wonder how her twins are doing? Hope all is well with you Alan. Your old camp mate, Russell (Ruscal) Edelstein |

I have a bunch of pictures of that trip to Montreal, my first time out of the country. I remember the youth hostel that we stayed in, a former monastery facing the river, but really can't remember the trip up or back. Much more typical of my college travels a few years later in that sense.

Pioneers 1968 N-burg 6 weeks
Believe it or not, I still have a camper/staff list from Pioneers 1968. Janet, I don't see your name on it. Were you in Narrowsburg 6 weeks? Joan Michaels is local to Steve and me although I have not made contact with her. Steve, I'm in Yorktown, just down the road from you. I didn't go to Bayside, but I did go to Cardozo. I know Bobby Brownstein has posted a bunch of times and I heard from Emily Saltz a couple of years ago. I believe she is in Boston. Saw Peter Bass at his cousins Bar Mitzvah last May (2007). While my memory is fading, I believe Kenny, Steve, and I were in the same tent in Pioneers. Can't remember who the others were. We had a great time in Montreal. One of the pavillions from the Expo is now a casino and I've been there quite a few times since. All else is well and it's great to see so many old names.

Yes Alan we were in the same tent along with Pete. I can't remember who else was in the tent as there were a total of 6 in the tents.

I'm really stretching my brain right now, but looking at the list, I think Lew Weinstein may have been in our tent and maybe Cliff Blackman. Steve, I can send it to you snail mail if you e-mail me your address, fax it to you, or we can just meet up somewhere. E-mail me at alterbma at optonline.net.

Unit 5 1967
Quote:
I have a vague recollection of a counselor named Phyllis with HUGE black teased hair. There was a black girl named Darrell who was accidentally assigned to a boy's bunk initially because of her name. It's strange...I have such vivid memories of the PLACE -- the deep dark pine forest; the brown lake, those stupid peach pit rings -- but almost none of the people. Oh wait. One more memory. A blind kid, Mark Solomon from Brooklyn. Oh! And a girl, Siri Bookman also from Brooklyn, but I don't remember what unit I knew her from. I was friends with Steve Chester (aka Buzzy) for several seasons, but don't remember if he was in Unit 5 with me. He must have been in Pioneers because he was on my western trip and we were already friends by then. We stayed friends for many years afterwards, and even reconnected a few years ago via another WelMet website that is now defunct. Who do you remember? (not me, I'm sure!!!!) ![]() |

Hey Al,
I would love a copy of that list as well. Also, Lewie was in our tent, I think. Was Eddie Cohen in as well? Kenny |

Kenny,
E-mail me your address and I'll send it along. (alterbma at optonline.net, but replace the at with an @) I don't remember if Eddie Cohen was. Alan |
